Edwards Air Force Base Activates 3.4 MW Tracking System from Array Technologies
Three-phase project will help offset peak demand utility costs
Albuquerque, NM – 3/12/12 – Array Technologies has announced the completion of three 1.13 MW sites at Edwards Air Force Base in California, delivering a combined 3.4 MWs of solar energy to help cut peak-power utility costs of the military installation. Constructed by EPC and owner Borrego Solar, the base will use the energy generated under a power-purchasing agreement.
Home to the Air Force Flight Test Center, the nation’s preeminent facility for testing aerospace systems, Edwards AFB chose Array Technologies’ DuraTrack HZ™ tracking system as it maximizes land coverage while generating up to 25% more energy than conventional fixed-rack installations. It provides the maximum return on investment for any utility-scale project, and its smart design ensures a minimization of materials and robust performance.
The sites will provide approximately 10% of the base’s energy needs while offsetting peak-power demand expenses, especially in the summer months when the cost doubles. With an annual utility bill of $15 to $18 million, Edwards Air Force Base will save money with a below the utility price per kWh of electricity.
